HOKA Product Launch with a 3D Holographic Sports Store Window

Explore how HOKA captivated commuters in one of Europe’s busiest transit corridors, setting a new benchmark for sports retail innovation.

OVERVIEW

Case Study Summary

Client: HOKA • Industry: Sportswear & Retail
Challenge: Launching a specialist trail shoe to a broad urban audience in a high-transit location, where traditional displays fail to engage busy passengers and shoppers.
Solution: A single well-placed holographic unit can do the work of an entire launch event. HOKA and Ochsner Sport Pro chose HYPERVSN to put the Mafate 5 in the spotlight in one of Switzerland’s most-visited retail locations.
Key Outcomes:

A HYPERVSN Solo holographic window installation visualising the HOKA Mafate 5 in floating 3D, stopping commuters and shoppers mid-stride in Europaallee throughout the launch period in Q4 2025.

A cost-effective running shoe launch campaign that generated strong visual engagement and positive feedback from HOKA’s marketing team.

HOKA

About the Client

Country & Region

HOKA was founded in 2009 in Annecy, France, by Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, former Salomon employees. It is headquartered in the US and operates globally across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific. This case study features its Mafate 5 launch activation in Q4 2025 at Ochsner Sport Pro’s new flagship in Europaallee, Zurich.

Campaign Location

Ochsner Sport Pro is a Swiss premium sports retailer, part of the Ochsner Sport Group, offering performance equipment and footwear for outdoor, running and winter sports. The Europaallee store is located directly adjacent to Zurich’s main railway station (Zürich Hauptbahnhof), one of the busiest transit hubs in Europe.

Market Position & Scale

Trail running is one of the fastest-growing outdoor sports globally, with participation increasing significantly since 2020 as consumers seek outdoor activities. As a result, HOKA has grown from a niche trail running brand to a mainstream athletic footwear label, with global net sales exceeding $1.4 billion in fiscal year 2024.

01. Challenge

Standing Out in High-Traffic Transit Retail Environments

Arrow CHALLENGE

Engaging Zurich’s Fast-Moving Audience

Retail locations connected to major transport hubs present a unique challenge. The footfall numbers are extraordinary but a large portion of the audience is not there to shop. Commuters move through transit corridors with purpose and pace, largely accustomed to tuning out the visual environment around them. For brands and retailers in these locations, the opportunity is enormous, however, the bar for success is high. A display that would stop a leisure shopper in a traditional mall could be completely invisible to a commuter with a train to catch.
Europaallee is a major hub in Zurich retail, combining offices, residences, retail and direct rail connectivity – generating extremely high daily pedestrian traffic. The nearby station, Zürich Hauptbahnhof, handles approximately 450,000 passengers daily, making Europaallee one of the highest-footfall retail locations in Switzerland. For Ochsner Sport Pro opening a new flagship here, and for HOKA launching the Mafate 5, this dynamic was both the opportunity and the challenge. The audience was there in vast numbers but capturing their attention would require something genuinely outstanding.

Arrow CHALLENGE

Creating a Stop-and-Stare Moment

Standard window graphics and traditional retail signage disappear in this environment. Even 2D screens, though dynamic, often fail to create those “stop-and-stare” moments brands crave. They have become part of the expected surroundings – present but invisible. Window displays are the first point of contact between a retail brand and a pedestrian audience – their effectiveness directly impacts footfall and brand perception in competitive retail districts. In this case, the window had to do more than display a product. It had to stop and engage people who had no intention of stopping.
Pain Point: Standard sports store window displays fail to interrupt the pace of high-transit audiences, blending into the background rather than commanding attention.

Europaallee is a hotspot for Zurich retail but pedestrians move quickly and with purpose, reducing the effectiveness of passive display formats.

A new store opening in a competitive premium retail corridor requires a launch moment that announces its arrival with immediate visual impact.

02. Challenge

Communicating Specialist Innovation to a Broad Urban Audience

Arrow CHALLENGE

Showcasing Performance Beyond the Image

Performance footwear brands face a particular communication challenge at launch. Beyond simple visual appeal, their products are defined by materials, construction, geometry and technical detail that simply cannot be conveyed by flat images. A 2D photograph shows one angle, one colourway, one moment. It cannot communicate the design philosophy, engineering excellence or in-motion performance of specialist shoes. Yet these are precisely the details that make such products compelling and worth stopping for.
The global sports footwear market was valued at over $100 billion in 2023 and is expected to grow at a CAGR of approximately 4.5% through 2030. As HOKA expands within this market from niche trail running label to mainstream performance brand, every running shoe launch activation must speak to two audiences at once: existing fans who already understand what they are looking at, and a broader urban consumer who may be encountering HOKA running shoes for the first time. This requires an immersive brand experience that is as educational as it is captivating.

Reimagining Product Display in 3D

The HOKA Mafate 5 is a high-stack trail running shoe designed for maximum cushioning on technical mountain terrain. Holographic retail displays allow brands to showcase shoes from every angle simultaneously – communicating design, materials and colour in a way no flat image or mannequin can replicate. For a product that is unlike anything else on the market, this capability was exactly what the launch required.
Pain Point: Traditional retail displays cannot convey the 3D design complexity of a specialist performance shoe to a broad urban audience.

Static images show a single angle and fail to communicate the material depth, design innovation and performance of a technical running shoe.

HOKA’s brand expansion from niche to mainstream requires launch activations that introduce the product compellingly to new audiences – not just confirm it to existing fans.

The Solution

Forward-Thinking Sports Retail Innovation

For this campaign, HOKA worked with Hubgrade, an authorised HYPERVSN reseller and implementation partner in Switzerland, providing end-to-end holographic display services including content creation, installation and support.
Research from the University of Bath found that product-focused holograms can drive sales uplifts of up to 62% compared to traditional displays. HYPERVSN studies on similar retail activations indicate an average increase in in-store traffic of approximately 23% when a holographic window display is deployed. For HOKA and Hubgrade, those numbers matter.

Why HYPERVSN?

HYPERVSN is the market leader in immersive experiences powered by 3D holographic technology. The HYPERVSN Solo is a single-unit 3D holographic LED display, producing vivid floating images up to 65cm in diameter, ideal for window and counter activations. This was the ideal choice for HOKA’s shoe launch marketing plan.

Hardware Configuration

A single HYPERVSN Solo unit, installed inside a custom-made accessory designed specifically for the Ochsner Sport Pro window and based on the HYPERVSN Solo Station accessory.

Content Format

A photorealistic 3D animation of the HOKA Mafate 5, rotating continuously to show the outsole construction, midsole stack and upper detail. Communicating the shoe’s design innovation from every angle, the content both attracts and educates anyone walking past.

Placement Strategy

Positioned in the main shop window of the Ochsner Sport Pro branch in Europaallee. The store is situated in the indoor arcade that connects two major roads and is a high-traffic thoroughfare for commuters to the nearby station.

Stars

Product Discovery

Trail running is growing in popularity, developing into a lifestyle trend with mass market appeal. Tapping into this, the holographic window introduced this specialist shoe to a broad Zurich audience who may have no prior knowledge of HOKA running shoes, without requiring them to enter the store.

Customers

Brand Perception

Deploying a holographic product launch in a premium retail district signals innovation and confidence. For HOKA, it reinforced the brand’s positioning as a performance-forward label that invests in the quality of its retail presence as well as its product.

Heart

Client Feedback

HOKA’s marketing team provided positive feedback on the activation, noting the quality of the holographic rendering and the brand impression delivered at one of Switzerland’s most prominent retail locations. This immersive brand experience set a strong precedent for future holographic HOKA campaigns.

Arrows

Competitive Advantage

In a district where every premium retailer is competing for the same pedestrian attention, a holographic retail display is a category-defining differentiator. It set Ochsner Sport Pro’s new Europaallee location apart as a destination store rather than just another retail unit in a busy corridor.

Gear

Operational Efficiency

Remote content management via the HYPERVSN CMS eliminates printed window graphics, reducing both material costs and environmental impact. Updates for new product launches or seasonal campaigns deploy in minutes, without store disruption.

Integration & Compatibility

Technology Used

This HOKA Mafate 5 launch activation used a single HYPERVSN Solo unit installed inside a custom-built accessory in the Ochsner Sport Pro shop window at Europaallee, Zurich. The campaign was implemented by Hubgrade, HYPERVSN’s certified partner in Switzerland.

YOUR HOW-TO GUIDE

Launch Your Next Product Like HOKA

A single holographic unit in the right window can reach more people in a day than most paid media campaigns reach in a week. Here is how to replicate HOKA’s approach for your own product launch.

  • Step 1: Define the Goal

Start with clarity on what the campaign needs to achieve. It could be maximum impressions from a commuter audience, product discovery for a new SKU, or announcing a new store opening. HOKA’s goal was to introduce the Mafate 5 to a broad Zurich audience at the moment of Ochsner Sport Pro’s store launch. A clear goal determines everything from placement to content approach to success metrics.

  • Step 2: Choose the Right Location

Shop windows in high-footfall transit corridors like Europaallee deliver a large, varied audience with no ongoing media spendIdentify the right store and then select a window that faces the highest pedestrian flow. HOKA and Ochsner Sport Pro chose a position that captured both destination shoppers and commuters, maximising daily reach.

  • Step 3: Build Content that Captures Product USPs

For maximum impact, 3D content must be created by a highly skilled, specialist design team like the HYPERVSN Design Lab. Content should showcase the product from every angle, highlighting its most distinctive design features. For HOKA, this meant the Mafate 5’s midsole stack, lug outsole and colourway – the details that make the shoe visually unique. Design content that rewards both distant and close observation.

  • Step 4: Design the Environment

The campaign shouldn’t start and end with a retail hologram. For a “phygital” effect, ensure the hologram and its physical surroundings are aligned and complementary. The HOKA hologram was housed in a bespoke, on-brand accessory, ensuring it was framed cleanly, safely enclosed and that the installation looked carefully crafted, not retrofitted.

  • Step 5: Deploy, Schedule and Measure

Once a campaign launches, it should be responsive to feedback and performance. Monitor the activation using footfall counters and social listening, as holographic retail displays generate organic social sharing when they are strong enough to stop people in their tracks. Use the CMS to update content remotely for seasonal campaigns or new launches without physical intervention.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What are 3D holograms?

HYPERVSN 3D holograms use proprietary technology to generate sharp, vivid images that appear to float in mid-air. HYPERVSN devices use high-speed LED rotors spinning at speeds that render the blades invisible to the human eye, producing a persistent 3D holographic image. Unlike traditional 3D displays, no specialist glasses or headsets are required – the effect is visible to the naked eye. HYPERVSN 3D holograms have a brightness of up to 3,000 nits, ensuring vivid visibility even in bright retail environments, under strong artificial lighting or in direct sunlight.

  • What is HOKA?

Founded in 2009 by former Salomon employees, HOKA was acquired by Deckers Brands in 2013, the parent company of UGG and Teva. HOKA running shoes are known for their maximalist cushioning – thick midsoles designed to absorb impact on long-distance runs and technical trails. The brand has grown from a niche running line into one of the fastest-growing footwear brands in the world.

  • What is the Swiss sports retail market like?

The Swiss sports retail market is dominated by national chains including Ochsner Sport, Intersport and Dosenbach, with Ochsner Sport Pro positioning itself at the premium end of the segment. Swiss consumers have high disposable income and strong participation in outdoor and trail sports, making Switzerland a strategically important market for performance footwear brands like HOKA.

  • How does HYPERVSN support sustainability in retail?

HYPERVSN 3D holograms use 70% less energy than traditional 2D LED screens, supporting sustainability goals for retail brands and retailers. Remote content management via the HYPERVSN CMS eliminates the need for printed promotional materials, reducing waste throughout the campaign lifecycle.
