Utilising Technology to Create an Efficient Passenger Process

The travel industry in 2026 faces a uniquely challenging landscape. According to the Airports Council International (ACI) World, global passenger volumes are projected to rise to 10.2 billion this year. This record number of passengers expect more seamless and rewarding experiences than ever before. The world’s leading travel hubs are realising that their role is no longer just about movement; they must create smooth, human-centred experiences that provide peace of mind and boost loyalty.
The team at Keflavík International Airport rely on technology to support everything from ticketing to wayfinding, recognising the boost in efficiency and customer satisfaction it offers. They recognised a need to take this same approach to improving the flow of their security hall, a space where delays and inconveniences have a huge impact on passenger experience. Despite their extensive 2D signage, passengers repeatedly failed to remove items such as liquids, laptops and tablets from their luggage. When this happens, bags are flagged to be searched manually, creating a delay in an already lengthy process. Transforming the security process into a quick, smooth encounter would give Keflavík Airport a highly competitive airport experience.
Pain Point: An airport is a high-stress, confusing place for many passengers. Traditional 2D signage fails to cater to a multilingual audience with limited time and attention. Keflavík Airport must increase efficiency while reducing stress and uncertainty for passengers.

Implementing innovative technology that connects with multilingual travellers.

Boosting efficiency without compromising on empathy.

Improving Customer Satisfaction with Enhanced Passenger Experience

Happy customers are great for an airport’s brand but also for the bottom line. Satisfied passengers spend up to 45% more on airport retail, dining and duty-free purchases compared to unhappy or stressed travellers. In travel, there are many best practices for making sure your airport nurtures happy customers. Collecting customer feedback is an effective step in measuring and improving customer satisfaction and retention rates. Listening and responding to passengers helps airports retain more customers and build loyalty. Going digital to offer proactive multi-channel support options helps quickly answer customer questions and ease passenger frustrations. At Keflavík Airport tickets for airport shuttle buses can be purchased online, at the airport information desk or from vending machines. Free unlimited Wi-Fi is available throughout Keflavík Airport and the airport offers various parking solutions for travellers. There are several car rental agencies located on-site and currency exchange services at the Prosegur Change branch in the arrivals hall.
However, today’s traveller doesn’t just want an efficient airport experience, they want a memorable one. In fact, 44% of travellers now say that local touches and memorable “moments” are key to their satisfaction.  Keflavík International Airport has already made strides in this department, with a children’s play area inspired by the magical world of Tulipop and live performances for guests during special events like the Iceland Airwaves music festival. Investing in technology to enhance efficiency in the security hall represented another opportunity for Keflavík Airport to create something truly memorable in their travel hub.
Pain Point: Customers are not just looking for efficiency – they are looking for an experience they won’t get at any other airport. Even educational solutions must enhance overall passenger experience and promote a memorable journey.

YOUR HOW-TO GUIDE

Turn Customer Feedback into Action Like Keflavík Airport

Using technology to boost both efficiency and customer experience is an excellent strategy for travel hubs. Here’s our step-by-step guide on how to use 3D holograms in your customer journey.

  • Step 1: Define the Goal

3D holography can support travel hubs with everything from wayfinding to retail visibility to passenger engagement. Define what the focus is for this campaign, drawing on customer feedback. Acting on customer feedback promotes positive customer experiences and builds customer loyalty.

  • Step 2: Select the Zone

Select a high-impact placement spot for the installation(s). Consider whether people are transiting (e.g. transfer corridors), passively waiting (e.g. departure gates) or actively browsing (e.g. retail spaces) as this will inform both your chosen solution and content.

  • Step 3: Optimise Content

Content must be quick to consume and accessible for multilingual passengers. Icons, arrows, minimal text and multilingual options are all advisable. Choose content that is immediately relatable depending on your city and the placement location within the airport.

  • Step 4: Align with Operations

To ensure content remains responsive and the installation is well-maintained, co-ordinate with other operational teams within the airport. Agree on a maintenance plan and a process for updates.

  • Step 5: Measurement and Iteration

Leveraging NPS and CSAT scores helps you measure your customer satisfaction efforts and uncover areas for further improvement. The HYPERVSN CMS allows clients to manage and amend campaigns remotely. Utilise this functionality to ensure that your campaign is responsive. Make updates based on performance, feedback or seasonal trends.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Keflavík Airport?

Keflavík Airport is located approximately 50 kilometres from Reykjavik city centre. It was originally built by the United States military during World War II as a replacement for a small British landing strip. In 1987, a new civilian terminal was completed, allowing access without passing through military areas. The United States military base at Keflavík Airport closed in 2006 and was handed over to the Icelandic government.  The airport currently has two runways, each measuring approximately 3,050 meters. It is now operated by Isavia, a government enterprise. The airport was used as a hub by the defunct airline WOW air until it ceased operations in March 2019.  In 2026, over 7.5 million passengers are expected to travel through Keflavík Airport. The airport’s masterplan aims to accommodate 15 million passengers per year, including a third runway and new terminal piers.

  • Does Keflavík Airport offer a positive passenger experience?

As the largest airport in Iceland and an important travel hub in the region, Keflavík Airport heavily invests in a positive passenger experience. The airport’s arrivals process is designed to be smooth, with duty-free shopping available before baggage claim. Frequent shuttle bus services connect Keflavík Airport to Reykjavík and other locations like the Blue Lagoon. A public bus service (Strætó Route 55) is available from Keflavík Airport, though it is less frequent and takes longer than shuttle buses. Taxi services are available outside Keflavík Airport 24/7, providing direct door-to-door service, although renting a car is highly recommended for independent travel, with various agencies located in the arrivals area. Aside from efficiency, the airport also values experience, with travellers able to enjoy discounts and deals at shops and restaurants within Keflavík Airport.

  • What are 3D holograms?

HYPERVSN 3D holograms use proprietary technology to generate sharp, vivid images that appear to be floating in mid-air. Our devices use high-speed LED-based rotors spinning at speeds that make the blades invisible to the human eye, leaving only high-definition 3D holographic content. Unlike traditional 3D displays, our solutions don’t require specialist glasses or headsets – the 3D effect is visible to the naked eye. With a brightness of 3,000 nits, these displays remain vivid even under intense lighting and bright, outdoor environments. Combining our hardware with exceptional 3D design, we create immersive experiences that enhance consumer experiences through digital signs and billboards, helping to increase footfall in physical stores.

  • How can travel hubs enhance customer experience?

Travel hubs can boost customer experience primarily through listening to and acting on their passengers’ feedback. For example, personalising the user experience shows your customers that you’re committed to meeting their specific needs and promotes product loyalty. Following up with customers not only lets them see the changes you’ve implemented, but also directly impacts customer retention by reminding users of your product or services value.
